1961 Leonard Baskin designed bronze medal for the 50th anniversary of the New York Public Library 2.5” diameter In very good condition, some fading to box velvet liningThe New York Public Library Medal Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Library at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street, May 23,1961. By Leonard Baskin. Bronze; 64mm. Obverse: Elderly sage looking downward represents the learning and wisdom of the past; upward looking youth represents hope through his aspiration to knowledge; the figures together express the motto above EX SCIENTIA SPES (from knowledge, hope). Reverse: Two classical columns through which rays of light are seen representing pure learning and applied learning, garlands representing the fruits of knowledge; together symbolizing The New York Public Library as a "gateway to light and learning". Comes with descriptive pamphlet.
