"Cabbage" is a beautifully executed woodcut of a full, round head of the humble vegetable. There is great texture and depth to the image. The outermost leaves are gently peeling away, and one has wilted down in the front. There is also a small, torn leaf just hanging on in the lower right. Listed as #44 in the Catalogue Raisonne "Hnizdovsky Woodcuts, 1944-1975", "Cabbage" has an edition of 100. This Trial Proof is signed, titled, and dated in pencil in the blank bottom margin. The image measures 10" x 10 1/4"; sight is 12" x 10 3/4". Nicely matted and framed to 19 1/2" x 18 1/2" overall. Jacques Hnizdovsky (1915-1985) was born in Ukraine; he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and Zagreb before emigrating to the U.S. in 1949. His prolific work was inspired by Albrecht Durer and many Japanese woodcut artists, and is in permanent collections at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the National Museum of American Art in Washington DC, and many other fine institutions. Fine condition.
