Kennedy Half Dollar US Modern Coinage Kennedy Half Dollars 1964-Date OBV Designer: Gilroy Roberts, REV Designer: Frank GasparroComposition: 1964 90% Silver, 1965-1970 40% Silver, 1971-date Copper-Nickel. Exceptions: 1976s, 1992s-date Copper-Nickel and 90% Silver Proofs were issued in sets. If no longer in original mint set these coins can be distinguished be examining the rim. A copper-nickel clad coin will have a copper colored, the silver coin will be silver colored all the way around. This is true for all 40% or 90% coins. Interesting fact: In order to fulfill certain congressional requirements� US coinage was produced in 90% silver until around 1966 however all 90% silver coins minted from 1964 on were dated 1964.
