1964 (P) Silver Proof Kennedy Half Dollar #05183 Kennedy Half Dollars (1964 to date) The 1964 issue was made of 90% silver, from 1965-1970 the silver content was reduced to 40% when a clad composition was put into use. The composition was again changed in 1971 when silver was eliminated from the coin and changed to the current copper-nickel clad. Since coin grading is subjective, you will find most coins in the store are conservatively graded not with the intention of achieving 100% accuracy, but with the intention of giving the buyer a general idea of the quality of the coin.
