Here is a lovely little TriumphHerald 1200 Saloon, presented in Olive green with contrasting Cactus greenstripe. Tax exempt and includes 11 months MOT. GWK781D, was bought new on the 8th July 1966 by a Mr Cecil Robins. He paid the grand sum of £564 5s 7p for the car, including a 17.5% staff discount (saving him a whopping £92 18s 6p) due to him being an employee of the Standard-Triumph motor corporation. Unbeknown to Cecil at the time however, this car would stay with him for the next 31 years until his death in the late nineties. The reason why I know this is because Cecil saved every receipt, bill and invoice for the car, including the cars original buff logbook and bill of sale. After Cecil's death, the car was passed to Cecil's nephew, who immediately dry stored it until 2012, when he unfortunately lost the use of the garage in which it resided. This is when a well known Triumph enthusiast and club member was contacted asking if he'd be interested in buying his uncle’s old car. A deal was done and GWK went home to its new (2nd) owner. The 2 nd owner started to carry out restoration work on her, but due to poor health was forced to sell her on. This is where I come into the story (3rd Owner). One evening at the monthly triumph owners club meet, I was asked if I'd be interested in a one owner from new Herald, which only needed light restoration work carrying out. A date was booked to view GWK and a deal was done without delay. All I have done to the car in its short stay with me, is fit a completely new braking and clutch system (everything has either been replaced with new or refurbished), got the little 1147cc engine running, rebuilt the Solex carburettor, carried out a full service (including replacing all fluids) and generally tidied the little car up. With this work carried out, GWK successfully passed its first MOT in 17 years (old tax disc from 1997 is still in the screen!) with no advisories. Having been looked after throughout its life and with the work in which I have carried out to the running gear, the car drives pretty much like a brand new Herald. The gearbox is slick and quiet, as is the rear diff. The engine is as sweet as a nut and pulls strongly. The clutch and brakes are all new so everything is precise and tight concerning those. Anyone who knows Triumph Herald's will know they started to rot when they were only a couple years old, especially the doors and bonnet. But not on this car. Cecil greased the inside of the doors, the window winder mechanisms and lock mechanisms excessively, as did he the bonnet hinges and all other moving parts. It's apparent that the car has had brand new steel front and rear valances fitted. GWK has had welding work done to its chassis and body tub over the years (receipts are present), which means everything is nice and solid underneath. But I must admit some of the welding work which has been carried out could have been done a little more cleanly and tidily. GWK's paintwork is good and has a nice shine. However there are certain areas which have been touched up and could do with cutting back and blending in a little better. The chrome work is ok. As expected on on an old car which was used daily for so long, some of the chrome has started to pit and dull. But a good chrome polish should bring these items back up to scratch. The wheels and tyres are all in good condition. The 4 matching Michelin tyres have no cracks and lots of thread. The cars interior is tidy with a good headlining and nice dashboard. The seats are ok, but some of the stitching has just started to come undone. It still has its original carpet set which is in surprisingly good condition; this is pretty unbelievable as these Heralds leaked like nothing else when new, due to their chassis construction.
