Formed by entrepreneur Malcolm McLaren (1946- ) in London in 1975, the Sex Pistols original line-up was singer Johnny Rotten (b. John Lydon, 1956- ), guitarist Steve Jones (1955- ), drummer Paul Cook (1956- ), and bassist Glen Matlock (1956- ). The band's torn clothes with safety pins came from McLaren and his lover Vivienne Westwood's (1941- ) 'Sex' shop in the King's Road, Chelsea. In 1976 the Sex Pistols released the single "Anarchy in the UK". In 1977, Sid Vicious (b. John Ritchie, 1957-79) replaced Matlock. To mark Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee year, the band released the anti-royal anthem "God Save the Queen". Despite a ban by BBC radio, the single reached number 2 in the charts. After a third hit single, "Pretty Vacant", the Sex Pistols released the album Never Mind the Bollocks - Here's The Sex Pistols (1977). In 1978, on the band's first tour of the United States, Rotten left the Sex Pistols. Now led by Sid Vicious, the band released a punk version of "My Way". in October 1978, Vicious was charged with the murder of his girlfriend Nancy Spungen. He died of a heroin overdose before the trial. The Sex Pistols were an English punk rock band formed in London in 1975. Although they lasted just two-and-a-half years and produced only four singles and one studio album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols, they were one of the most influential acts in the history of popular music, initiated a punk movement in the United Kingdom, and inspired many later punk and alternative rock musicians. The first incarnation of the Sex Pistols included singer John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten), lead guitarist Steve Jones, drummer Paul Cook and bassist Glen Matlock. Matlock was replaced by Sid Vicious early in 1977. Under the management of Malcolm McLaren, a visual artist, performer, clothes designer and boutique owner, the band provoked controversies that garnered a significant amount of publicity. Their concerts repeatedly faced difficulties with organisers and local authorities, and public appearances often ended in mayhem. Their 1977 single "God Save the Queen", attacking social conformity and deference to the Crown, precipitated the "last and greatest outbreak of pop-based moral pandemonium". Subjects addressed in their frequently obscene lyrics included the music industry, consumerism, abortion, violence, apathy, anarchy, fascism, the British Royal Family and the Holocaust.In January 1978, at the end of a turbulent tour of the United States, Rotten left the Sex Pistols and announced its break-up. Over the next several months, the three other band members recorded songs for McLaren's film version of the Sex Pistols' story, The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle. Vicious died of a heroin overdose in February 1979. In 1996, Rotten, Jones, Cook and Matlock reunited for the Filthy Lucre Tour; since 2002, they have staged further reunion shows and tours. On 24 February 2006, the Sex Pistols--the four original, surviving members and Sid Vicious--were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but they refused to attend the ceremony.Sixties Flashback: When you're going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair... Timothy Francis Leary was an American psychologist and writer, known for his advocacy of psychedelic drugs. During a time when drugs such as LSD and psilocybin were legal, Leary conducted experiments at Harvard University under the Harvard Psilocybin Project while his studies produced useful data, but Leary and his associate Richard Alpert were fired from the university. Leary believed LSD showed therapeutic potential for use in psychiatry. He popularized catchphrases that promoted his philosophy, such as "turn on, tune in, drop out", "set and setting", and "think for yourself and question authority." During the 1960's and 1970's, Leary was arrested regularly and was held captive in 29 different prisons throughout the world. President Richard Nixon once described Leary as "the most dangerous man in America." As the psychedelic revolution and hippy protest movement exploded counterculture shops blossomed from New York City Greenwich Village to San Francisco's Haight Ashbury to Berkeley, California a multitude of protest and cause buttons and many a psychedelic art poster brightly decorated landscape proclaiming the message of change- from Dr. Tim Leary's "Tune in, Turn on, Dropout" to the peace movements plea to "End the War in Vietnam" to the "Free Love" sexual revolution to zany barbs, legalizing marijuana and boosting acid rock bands like the Grateful Dead- these pin are now valuable collectibles bringing back memories of a vital era in American culture. Rock and roll is a genre of popular music that originated and evolved in the United States during the late 1940s and early 1950s, primarily from a combination of African-American genres such as blues, jump blues, jazz, and gospel music, together with Western swing and country music.Though elements of rock and roll can be heard in blues records from the 1920s and in country records of the 1930s, the genre did not acquire its name until the 1950s..In the earliest rock and roll styles of the late 1940s and early 1950s, either the piano or saxophone was often the lead instrument, but these were generally replaced or supplemented by guitar in the middle to late 1950s. The beat is essentially a blues rhythm with an accentuated backbeat, the latter almost always provided by a snare drum. Classic rock and roll is usually played with one or two electric guitars (one lead, one rhythm), a string bass or (after the mid-1950s) an electric bass guitar, and a drum kit. In addition, rock and roll may have contributed to the civil rights movement because both African-American and white American teens enjoyed the music. It went on to spawn various sub-genres, often without the initially characteristic backbeat, that are now more commonly called simply "rock music" or "rock". Psychedelic rock is a style of rock music that is inspired or influenced by psychedelic culture and attempts to replicate and enhance the mind-altering experiences of psychedelic drugs. It often uses new recording techniques and effects and draws on non-Western sources such as the ragas and drones of Indian music. It was pioneered by musicians including the Beatles, the Byrds, and the Yardbirds, emerging as a genre during the mid-1960s among folk rock and blues rock bands in the United Kingdom and United States, such as Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, the Doors and Pink Floyd. It reached a peak in between 1967 and 1969 with the Summer of Love and Woodstock Rock Festival, respectively, becoming an international musical movement and associated with a widespread counterculture, before beginning a decline as changing attitudes, the loss of some key individuals and a back-to-basics movement, led surviving performers to move into new musical areas. Psychedelic rock influenced the creation of psychedelic pop and psychedelic soul. It also bridged the transition from early blues- and folk music-based rock to progressive rock, glam rock, hard rock and as a result influenced the development of sub-genres such as heavy metal.
