Scarce volume - TAPA IN POLYNESIA, by Simon Kooijman. Published by Bishop Museum Press, Honolulu, HI in 1972. Tapa is cloth made from the bark of the mulberry tree, primarily in the Pacific Islands. Narrative organized by area of the world where the cloth is made: Tahiti, the Cook Islands, the Austral Islands, Rapa, Pitcairn, New Zealand, Hawaii, the Marquesas Islands, Easter island, Samoa, Uvea (Wallis Island), the Hoorn Island (Futuna and Alofi), Rotuma, Niue, Tonga, Fiji Islands, techniques and function: regional differentiation, ornamental tapas and tapa ornaments in Eastern Indonesia and Polynesia, the Indonesian-Polynesian Tapa Complex, several appendices, including one showing museums and institutions from whose collections objects are shown in the book. Each geographical chapter covers sources of the bark, the manufacturing process, the decorated tapas and the finished product.
