1974 Zippo Lighter - Phillips 66 Petroleum Company This is great looking Zippo was made in 1974 for the Phillips Petroleum Company, the maker of the world renown Phillips 66 Gasoline. This high flying energy company started in 1917 as Phillips Petroleum Company, founded by L.E. Phillips and Frank Phillips, of Bartlesville, Oklahoma. The 66 in the name has an interesting story. In 1927, the company's gasoline was being tested on US Highway 66 in Oklahoma, and when it turned out that the car was going 66 miles an hour, the company decided to name the new fuel Phillips 66 . For your enjoyment, I have provided a picture of a typical Phillips 66 station that could be found around our country when this great Zippo was made. In 2002 they merged with Conoco Oil Co.
