In 1966, he joined the office of the commissioner of baseball as director of publicity, and in 1974, he became vice president of the Major League Promotion Corporation. He retired in 1985. He was known for his scoops on the Dodgers' move to Los Angeles, Joe DiMaggio's retirement, and many other stories. A prolific writer of magazine articles, he also edited the Macmillan Baseball Encyclopedia. Other books include It's Good to Be Alive (with Roy Campanella), Baseball's Greatest Moments, and The Game and the Glory. He received the J.G. Taylor Spink Award from the Hall of Fame in 1975.
