What makes this button so special is that it is an authentic BATTERSEA PEWTER BUTTON. It is an "Extremely rare and hard to find” “cuff-sized” (7/16”) pewter button that features a Bernina Sewing Machine in the center. Also along the top perimeter of the button is the word, “Bernina”, and along the bottom perimeter of the button is the word again, “Bernina”. Evidently, these buttons were manufactured specifically for the Bernina Sewing Machine Company, as a premium for their dealers and/or sales reps. The backmark has the words, “Battersea pewter” and "Battersea Ltd.”. Also, a special and unique feature is the “face shank”. The shank depicts a man’s face, as seen in the photos. In order to explain exactly what a Battersea button is, I refer to Peggy Ann Osborne’s book, “button, button”, published in 1993 by Schiffer Publishing. The author states “Possibly the most unique button shanks ever devised are the patented face shanks of Battersea Ltd’s pewter buttons manufactured in the late 1970’s.....The face shanks were used only on solid pewter buttons....All were backmarked with the company’s name and the date of manufacture.
