Then in December of 1970, President Nixon signed legislation authorizing the minting of the Eisenhower Dollar in honor of General and President Dwight D. Eisenhower.Minted first in 1971, the Eisenhower Dollar was an unpopular circulation coin because of its size. Citing the unpopular circulation, the mint sought to replace it with a smaller size dollar coin. Hence 1978 was the final year that the Eisenhower Dollar was minted, being replaced by the (also unpopular) Susan B Anthony Dollar.On the obverse (front) is the stern looking bust of Eisenhower. On the reverse is the Bald Eagle swooping low over the moon in commemoration of the lunar landing. In the eagle's claws is a symbol of peace; the olive branch.
