The USA team was composed of amateur and collegiate players. They beat the long-dominant and heavily-favored Soviet Union, in a match held on February 22, 1980, in Lake Placid, New York during the 1980 Winter Olympics. They later went on to win the Gold Medal beating Sweden 4-2. The USA was seeded seventh in the competition and was not expected to compete. They proved everyone wrong and pulled one of the biggest upsets ever.
