c.1982 GULFSTREAM II/ III PACIFIC MINIATURES MODEL GULFSTREAM II / III MODEL BY PACIFIC MINATURES This auction is for an original resin model of a Gulfstream II / III passenger airplane. The model fuselage bottom is marked 'Pacific Minatures' in Commerce, CA. Not being an aviation expert I cannot determine if this is a retrofitted G II or an actual G - III with the design approved winglets. I can say that compared to modern winglets which are intergrated into the wing design, these appear to be simply 'bolted' on and thus the case for a modifed G -II seems more likely to my untrained eye. The model appears to be 1/72 scale based on the dimensions. The resin constructed plane weighs approximately 3.5 lbs. The model dimensions are as follows: Wingspan: 18.25 inches Height (base to tail tip): 9.25 inches Length: (nose to tail): 20.75 inches This plane exhibits the corporate colors of the Copley Press (blue and white) and was likely a corporate jet owned (or originally bought) by Jim Copley for Copley Press business travel. The plane is on a wooden base which holds the plane in place by way of two metal posts which insert into the model's fuselage. Because this example came from the Jim Copley Estate, and he frequently received early examples of contractor's models and likely would have been among the earlier reciepients of an important model such as this. His role as an infleuential newspaper owner, former Navy Officer and friend of the GOP and the later Nixon Administration would have had him on a 'short list' of earlier reciepients for mementos of this type. The model is in very good overall condition. The model has the starbord winglet damaged from a previous fall. It's unclear whether the winglet broke off and was re-glued or was simply damaged to this extent without the need for repair. In either case, nothing is missing and the damage could be easily repaired to an almost undetectable state by a modeler of average skill with the appropriate materials. Copley (1916 - 1973) who owned the Copley Press and founded the Copley Library in San Diego California. James Copley was born in St. Johnsville, N.Y., in 1916. Both of his parents died in the flu epidemic that swept the U.S. in 1918, and when he was 4 he was adopted by Col. and Mrs. Ira C. Copley. Col. Copley bought The San Diego Union and Evening Tribune from the Spreckels family in 1928. Copley graduated from Yale in 1939 and started his journalism career at another of his father's papers, The Culver City Star News, where he solicited ads and circulation as well as sweeping the floor and writing news stories. When the elder Copley died in 1947, Jim became Chief Executive Officer of the corporation publishing a large family of newspapers, the flagship of which was, and is today, the Union-Tribune. He pursued a dynamic program of expansion of the newspaper plants, both technologically and in size. He took an active personal interest in the editorial quality of his papers. In the 26 years he headed the enterprise until his death in 1973, the Union's circulation tripled and the Union-Tribune moved into a wholly new plant with new presses in Mission Valley. Copley's politics were unabashedly conservative, Republican and pro-American, and still have a deep influence on the voting populace of San Diego. He was President of the Boy Scouts San Diego County Council, the Navy League San Diego Council, and received so many industry and patriotic awards that they are too numerous to list here. He also was a notable philanthropist to local causes, including large, key gifts to build the Copley Auditorium at the San Diego Museum of Art and Copley Library at University of San Diego.
