Abrams Ltd in association with The Frick Collection 11" by 9.5", 167pp DETAILS A bright, clean first edition of Nicolas Lancret by Mary Tavener Holmes. Bound in cloth with gilt lettering and an unclipped dust wrapper. First edition. Nicolas Lancret, 1690 –1743, a French painter, was born in Paris , and became a brilliant depicter of light comedy which reflected the tastes and manners of French society under the regent Orleans . The number of his paintings is immense; he executed a few portraits and attempted historical composition, but his favorite subjects were balls, fairs, village weddings, etc. In 1719 he was received as Academician, and became councillor in 1735; in 1741 he married a grandchild of Boursault. Mary Tavener Holmes is an art historian specializing in 18 th century European art. Holmes graduated from Texas Christian University , and received a Ph.D. degree in art history from the New York University Institute of Fine Arts. CONDITION The binding is tight and firm. There is almost no wear to the extremities. There is almost no wear to the dust wrapper. Internally the pages are clean and bright. Overall the condition is fine, with a fine dust wrapper.
