19C AMERICAN SILVER PLATE CO PICKLE CASTOR W/ TONGS & CRANBERRY GLASS JAR This listing is for a circa 1890 silver plate and cranberry glass pickle castor by the American Silverplate Company, which is a trade name of Simpson Hall Miller & Company. The silver plate castor measures 11 inches or 28 cm high, and is 5 inches or 12.5 cm at its widest. The pickle castor has a cranberry glass jar for holding the pickles in, tongs on the side and a silver plate open work holder for the rest. The tongs are 6 ¼ inches or 16 cm long. The silver plate holder has a stepped base with a low relief floral border. At the top of the holder is an open work handle with scrolling acanthus leaves and flowers. The tongs accent the piece nicely and have open claws. The glass jar is a translucent cranberry red glass with a dimpled design. The bottom of the silverplate holder is marked “AMERICAN SILVER PLATE CO” along with the number “302”. The American Silver Plate Company was a trade name for Simpson Miller Hall & Company which was formed in Wallington, CT in 1868, and was absorbed in to International Silver Company in 1898. The pickle castor is in very good condition. The silver plate has darkened with age and the glass jar has a few minor flea nicks in the top rim.
