19th C Ashworth Pottery ILIAD HOMER Greek Mythology Description Up for auction is a 19th century English porcelain pitcher decorated with two famous scenes from The Iliad by Homer. On one side is a reproduction of the 1793 engraving by John Flaxman called "Fight for the Body of Patroclus", in which Achilles fights to claim the body of his childhood friend Patroclus, who has been slain in battle in the Trojan Wars. The other side shows another illustration by John Flaxman (1793) : the goddesses Juno and Minerva rushing to assist the Greeks. The details on this pitcher were hand-highlighted by a factory artist at the time. It is stamped "ASHWORTH", a British maker, and also has a red artist's signature (8411). Descriptions of the two scenes are also stamped on the underside (see photos). The pitcher measures about 5 1/4" high. It is in very good condition for an item of this age (probably 1850s - 1860s). There are four small holes drilled around the edge (was it hanging?); there's a small hairline around one of the holes on the interior lip. I see no other chips or cracks. There's crazing on the interior, and a little paint loss on the handle. Please take a look at our other auctions. We're selling lots of beautiful sterling silver and antiques, and gladly combine shipping. -------------------------------------------------------- read more
