Description: A sweet find for the collector of 19th c. English Imari wares, the syrup jug offered in this auction has underglaze transfer decoration enhanced with hand-applied enamels in the Imari palette. Its typically "Oriental" pattern with pagodas and bridges arched over serene waters, tiny little fishermen and rock gardens is done in greens, yellows, iron reds and cobalt blues with small details in acqua and a lighter orange, almost salmon, color. The pitcher's neck is embellished by a rather wide decorative band of stylized foliate and geometric elements, which can be seen on the serpent-faced handle as well.The jug has a six-sided bulbous body with a slightly pinched spout and is outfitted with a pewter lid. It measures 6 1/2" in height and the distance between the spout and the handle is slightly shy of 5". It is not marked except for a series of numbers, an H and what looks like a circle with a dot at the center as well as an impressed F so it's difficult for me to attribute it to a specific maker. I think that it might be a Mason's piece because of the decoration and the overall quality and would welcome any insights as to the potter. Condition: The syrup jug is in excellent condition. I have no problems to report and would like to stress the nicely shaped body and the great match between that and the pewter lid. The colors read more
