A wonderful 19th c. child's embroidered antique wool on linen sampler family record signed Emma Young & dated 1842. This early sampler is very detailed & has the record for an entire family dating as far back as 1780. This includes when some of the family members were baptized as well as some of the deaths in the family. The border is an incredible & very detailed tulip border, in the middle is Adam & Eve between a tree with a snake or serpent & angels on the top, on either side of a large crown. There are birds, dogs, a deer, a devil, baskets of flowers & stylized flower pots. The condition of this early sampler is remarkable, the colors are still very bright, obviously very cared for over the years. The sampler has a wonderful tulip border with a verse in the middle which reads: Here the fair tree of knowledge grows and yields a free repast, Sublimer sweets than nature knows invite the longing taste. At the top is a family record which starts: George Young baptized Mar 7th, 1780 / Ann Young baptized Sept 6th, 1786 /John Young born Oct 12th, 1810 / Eliza born Jan 20th, 1813 / Ann born Feb 9th, 1815 / Thomas born Dec 10th, 1816 / George born Mar 26th, 1818 / Mary & Mark born Aug 8th, 1820 / Mary died Jan 9th, 1821- aged 22 weeks / Judith Matilda born May 17th, 1822 / Jonathan born Jan 25th, 1824 / Emma born Nov 30th, 1825 / Frances read more
