19th C. Copper Relief DRAGON Devil+ Monster FRANCE Signed Aristide Barre (France, 1840-1922). Barre was a sculptor and engraver ( ciseleur in French, creating medals and medallions etc.) who did metal work in the renaissance style: at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1878 a shield Barre made received first prize and sold for 800 francs. Later at a Paris Salon , a metal chest he made won top honors and was purchased by the city government. In 1999 the Louvre added two of his works to their collection (a cup and chest). This relief measures 7" across and weighs one pound two ounces.
