19 th C. Historical Staffordshire Transferware Platter – “Italian Scenery”Condition: In excellent condition consistent with age and usage. See photos.Dimensions: Approximately 14 " ” x 10 3⁄4”.Blue and white transferware platter of unidentified maker, circa 1825.Floral border with large oak leaves, a rose, and what appears to be a passionflower.Central scene composed of trees, buildings a bridge over a river, horses, a horseman, and 3 figures.See photos.This design has no formal name but has been given the name “Italian Scenery” in the Transferware Collectors Club database.The design adapts at least two source prints from the book "Italian Scenery, from Drawings Made in 1817 by Miss (Elizabeth Frances) Batty" published by Rodwell & Martin in London, 1820.The building at the left edge is taken from "Villa Borghese, Near Florence", while the winding road is from "Ponte del Palazzo Near Florence".An identical 10 inch plate with this pattern is discussed and attributed to an unknown maker in Coysh and Henrywood’s “The Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery 1780-1880 Vol. I” at page p. 193 and is illustrated at page 195.A similar example is pictured in Little’s “ Staffordshire Blue ” in plate 98 with an impressed "LEEDS POTTERY" mark. Enoch Wood used the same prints in its own Italian Scenery series.
