This is a type of drawing often called "Sandpaper Art", popular in America in the early-mid 1800's. It is made not on sandpaper, but by applying marble dust to heavy paperboard, which gives the charcoal drawing a subtle sparkle when light glances off it. See the link below for more information on this technique. /issues/35/smith_valerie.php The drawing shows an Indian on horseback, at a river's edge, with cliffs and hills rising around him. It is very appealing amateur art. The frame is dark wood (mahogany?) with gilt on the inner edge, and is in good condition. The drawing is approx 14" x 20", with frame it is approx 16.5"x 23".
