Greetings ebayers! Up for auction tonight is a wonderful antique Delft tin glaze pottery tobacco jar with the name "Makuba" ornately presented within a beautiful floral & scroll design. It stands 10" high overall. It is marked with the "Three Bells" (de drie klokken) symbol for the factory in the Netherlands w it was made. I believe this to be a 19thc piece (the factory was in operation from 1670-1841). I purchased this at auction from a collection being sold by an antique dealer/collector - she had closed her last store in the early 1980's & hadn't opened the boxes until they came to auction. As for the name "Makuba", I researched this & only found a racehorse with the name & also found it was an area in Africa. I have been told that usually the name on the front of these jars was the place the tobacco was harvested & came from - that way when it was shipped off the seller / buyer of the tobacco would know its land of origin. I also think this jar probably had a metal lid originally but is long gone, now t is only the jar. It does have overall crazing (normal considgering the age) but t are no cracks, repairs or chips. Don't miss out on this piece - a wonderful addition to any collection! Please see my pictures below for a more complete description and thanks for looking!
