Exceptional antique 19th century embroidered surcoat or robe. Midnight blue satin ground with polychromatic figurative kesi and Peking knot, or forbidden stitch, embroidery. Eight medallions in total, three on front, three on back and one on either shoulder. Each depicts a different court scene, ranging from garden scenes to figures examining scrolls, etc. White silk contrast along edges and at cuffs. Back of cuffs finely and densely embroidered in an array of florals and vases. Floral sprays throughout robe occupying space between medallions. Tonal blue embroidery at neck. Goldwork surface embellishment throughout. Lined inside in fine lightweight blue silk.Excellent condition. Clearly stored in optimal conditions. One area of foxing on white silk cuff as photographed. Some slight discoloration along seams in liner. Some occasional loose threads. No tearing, no separations and no age wear to silk.
