RARE - 1st Edition - 1913 Phiz and Dickens as the appeared to Edgar Browne Published by James Nisbet & Co Limited A magnificent Edwardian first edition of Phiz and Dickens which was written about one of Charles Dickens illustrators, Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz") by his son, Edgar Browne. This large book is blue hardback with gold lettering and a gilt embossed figure. It has 39 clean large plate illustrations by Hablot Knight Browne in black and white, sepia tone and colour. The book is in good condition being complete but with slight discolouration to the outside of the pages and some dust and fading to the outer cover. There are 320 numbered pages, with the pages being in overall Very Good condition. Hablot Knight Browne (1815-1882), known to the world as "Phiz", was one of the greatest illustrators of the English Victorian era. He had a remarkable relationship with Dickens; and was a central figure in an active circle of authors, illustrators, and powerful publishers. This record by his son is really a beautiful reference and collector's treasure for any enthusiast of Dickens or Victorian illustration. The book looks at the life of his father and his associations with Dickens, Charles Lever, Harrison Ainsworth and other authors and illustrators. Approx Size 25cm x 18mm, 1.140kg
