This letter is written by John Bilderback of the 1st Michigan Cavalry on May 4,1865 from Petersburg Virginia. He is writing to his cousin Emily Simmons. Her husband is also in this Regiment and is the cook. John would have been in mist the Major Eastern battles including Gettysburg. He writes while that campaign is going well it is now over and a hundred miles from here to North Carolina line on there way to Sherman they got the news that Johnston had surrendered. There was great cheering at the Cavalry corps. They then started across the Appomattox River and then plans to march to Richmond. Her husband is cooking for the quartermaster. The citizens and paroled soldiers are plenty now through the country.John would later be a GAR Officers in Cass County Michigan. In good condition The 1st Michigan was part of General Custer brigade.
