This is a superb and rare pair of 1880s Scottish black glass (dark olive green) beer bottles, each made in a three piece mold (the base to the shoulder in one piece, the upper shoulder and neck in two halves) and heavily embossed on the indented base. The larger 11.5" high bottle is thicker, darker glass with a nice, crude whittled finish from the wooden mold and is embossed on the base with a central T for Tennents Beer as well as 6 TO THE GALLON. Tennents beer, one of Scotland's favorites today, was started in Glasgow in 1740. The smaller bottle is 10" high in a lighter olive green and embossed on the base 12 TO GALLON. The crude and runny hand applied blob lips were designed for a cork closure and both are in good condition with no chips or cracks but t are some surface scratches. Most of the bottles we are currently listing were recovered from late 1800s Victorian rubbish dumps in the UK and having spent over 100 years buried in the ground they will not be in pristine condition and may have scuffs, residue staining or sometimes 'sickness' which is a clouding of the glass or iridescence caused by a chemical reaction with the soil.
