Denomination : $50.00 About the Gold American Eagle being Auctioned: The United States Mint offers the Gold American Eagle as an official gold bullion coin. First released by the United States Mint in 1986, and by law, the coin features a composition of .9167 fine 22K gold, a radiant and durable metal established as a coinage standard centuries ago and the gold must come from mines within the United States of America. Small amounts of alloy added to the gold create more durable and lasting coins resistant to scratching and marring, allowing them to maintain a high degree of luster over time. It is offered annually in 5, 10, 25 and 50 dollar denominations (those being 1/10,1/4, 1/2, and 1 ounce coins). It is guaranteed for purity and weight by the United States Congress and Mint. The obverse design of the coin illustrates a rendition of the design used on the $20 St. Gaudens coins, which depicts Lady Liberty with flowing hair, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, showing the capitol building in the background. The reverse of the coin shows a male eagle in flight above a nest holding a female eagle and her hatchlings. Gold is often viewed as a hedge against inflation and economic turmoil. Diversification into gold out of traditional asset classes such as stocks, bonds and currencies by many non-gold investment funds has driven holdings of the popular bullion-backed, exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to record highs. A recent World Gold Council report released showed physical gold demand rose sharply in the second half of 2008.
