Austria 2009 International Year of Astronomy (Jahr der Astronomie) W/ Numbered Coabimetallic 25 Euro piece produced by the Austrian Mint and graded MS 69 by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation, the official grading service of the American Numismatic Association (ANA) and Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG).Each 34 mm coin in the Austrian Mint's Silver Niobium series is an artistic gem featuring an outer ring of .900 silver (Ag) encircling an inner pill of 99.8% niobium (Nb). This piece recognizes UNESCO's International Year of Astronomy 2009 and pays tribute to 400 years of the telescope. From the Austrian Mint's description:In 1609, mathematician and astronomer Galileo first observed the moon with a telescope. His subsequent drawings of its surface provide the background to his portrait on this marvelous golden yellow silver niobium 25 euro coin's reverse. The Sterling silver ring around its niobium core shows the development of the telescope spanning from Isaac Newton to present-day radio telescopes. The dark side of the moon was, however, beyond Galileo's reach. A satellite is shown orbiting it on the obverse of the coin, while the outer silver ring shows planet Earth partly covered by the moon and a stylised sun illuminating the heavens.Specifications: Date of Issue - 28 April 2009 Quality - Special Uncirculated Series - Silver read more
