Russian Jurij Gagarin was the very first man to fly into space on April 12, 1961, at 9.07 am, from somewhere deep inside the Soviet Union. Alan Shepard was the first American in space. On May 5, 1961, he was launched on a suborbital flight that carried him to an altitude of 116 statute miles and to a landing point 302 statute miles down the Atlantic Missile Range. Ten years later, he commanded the Apollo 14 mission and became the fifth person to walk on the Moon. While on the Moon, Shepard struck two golf balls with a Wilson 6-iron head attached to a lunar sample scoop handle. Yuri Gagarin was killed in March 1968 when his MiG 15 crashed in a forest. Shepard died of leukemia on July 21, 1998, on the 29th anniversary of the first moonwalk.
