Up for purchase is an old and authentic (NOT a reprint or copy) 1877 dated J. B. LAURIN, DRY GOODS, GROCERIES MINERS SUPPLIES etc letterhead, from LAURIN'S, MONTANA (Territory at this early date). Note the town name of "Laurin's." This old document measures 8" by 10 1/2" in size. The town of Laurin, from the late 1860's thru the late 1870's, was a prosperous small town, located in Alder Gulch, where some of the first and richest gold discoveries were made in Montana Territory. It was established around a trading post ran by a Frenchman, Jean Baptiste Laurin. Laurin's store did very well as it carried supplies for the miners and engaged in the fur trade with the Indians. J. B. Laurin was a five foot seven inch tall man, weighing in at 350 pounds! He was a very shrewd businessman even though he couldn't read or write. Note that this letterhead has been signed "for" J. B. Laurin by another man. It has been estimated that Laurin built an economic empire of $500,000.
