20th Century Zoo-Rainbow/Bullfrog (Vault 948) M- DJ both sides have "Jan 1969" lightly and neatly stamped in blue ink (see scan). Blistering pyrotechnic 1969 CA hard psych monster with heavy dual fuzz guitars--RADICALLY different mono edited mixes from their big ticket LP which is in wide trippy stereo and lacks the pounding punch of the dry 45 mix (no echo or reverb). A-side sounds like a cross between early frantic Blue Cheer and Randy Holden's rippin' Other Half--yeah!!! The flip "Bullfrog" is also quite worthy and reissued on Mindrocker #13 LP and Mindrocker Box. This pummeling 45 version of "Rainbow" isn't reissued on any comp so the single is the only way to get this unique mix. Note: "Rainbow" is 2:48 (3:55 on the album) and "Bullfrog" is 4:30 (6:37 on the LP) plus both are noticeably alternate MONO versions without effects. On the strength of the music alone, these guys definitely could have given the MC5 a run for their money in the high-voltage department! What a great disc.
