249-251 AD Trajan Decius Silver Antoninianus - 'Dacia' - in exceptional condition for this issue (near FDC)Rome Mint 4.6 gm / 20 mm Obverse: IMP TRAIANVS DECIVS AVG : radiate, draped and cuirassed bust, right Reverse: DACIA, Dacian standing left, holding draco standard, or vertical staff surmounted with the head of an ass RSC 13, RIC 2b, Sear 9368 Trajan Decius (Caius Messius Quintus Decius) Trajan Decius was born in Pannonia in 201 AD – and died in battle in 251 AD. He reigned as Roman emperor between 249 AD and 251 AD. Decius was sent by Emperor Philip I (Philip the Arabian) to quell a mutiny, but having dealt with it, his soldiers hailed him as emperor, and he himself rebelled against Philip. Marched at the head of his army in August 249, he defeated and killed Philip in battle near Verona. After the death of his father, Philip’s son (Philip II his co-emperor) was quickly killed by the Praetorian guard: following which, Decius swiftly accepted the title of emperor, adding Trajan (Traianus) to his name. In an effort to revive the state religion he persecuted the Christians vigorously. His brief reign ended in late 251 AD, when he was killed attempting to repel an invasion of the Goths into Moesia.
