An original lot of 27 World War II vintage letters including the envelopes written to Marine Lieutenant Edward Gunnigle. The following are some excerpts from some of the letters: 7 Nov 1943 Dearest Sweetheart: tis past midnight and I'll apologize for a one pager on my day off.......I met Sally & we went to the movies. We saw "Behind the Rising Sun" which was a very good and no doubt true to life. It was about a youg J_p who was graduated from Cornell as an engineer & went back to Japan to Americanize t's way of life. Of course he was drafted when war broke out and promptly reverted back to his original life. He was "kilt" in the end and even tho he was cute, I was glad. They are a cruel race and the sooner they're wiped off this earth the better off we'll be.....The other picture (2 for 1!!!) was "Gals Ive" which was a typical "B" picture. The only thing that saved it for Sally & me was that the hero was a Marine!.......June 8/16/42 Dearie Nedwood is another dreary Sunday but at last I've heard from you.....T had been a ad in the local Long Island papers saying"Girls! Come come all...to Block Party For the Men in the Service! Free Food Free Beer Free Dancing with 100 Mairnes 100 Sailors 100 Soldiers and 100 Air Corps Men!" So we went to investigate. Yeah it was the usual bally hoo & flop. All the Mothers & Fathers & children in Port Washington were t making a mob and getting in the way. T were about 4 sailors, 8 ensigns from the Merchant Marines about 200 men from Mitchel Field and exactly 1 Marine. Each one of them was in the cluthes of some local girl so we just stood by. The music was pretty good but they would play 2 numbers & rest 20 minutes.....Two guys one soldier & one ensign asked me to dance with them!.....Jean Holmes was last week. She had gotten one of those printed cards from Artie saying he was transferred overseas. I imagine he's with the Marines in the Solomon Islands. The Marines are doing a real job t and this is beginning to look like their war.....June 27 Oct 43 Dearest Edward Didn't do you a ditty last night for a couple of reasons and both of them are that I was very tired......Late that night the wind rose considerably and the huge service flag hung over our block was torn to shred this AM. Yesterday at 1430 our dear little Mayor had an air raid drill imagine in that horrible weather!......I've forgotten Billie's cousin's name you know the Marine Corps Captain? Was it Frank Clarke? Anyway if you ever run across him either tell him this sadnes or advise him to contact the McGlains. They've tried every way to get in touch with him but even the Red Cross has failed. Edward I hate to sing bad news to you but you know yourself that this is a small world. Anyway the poor kid's Mother died about a month ago and his father died 16 days later. The Mcglains are really trying frantically to contact him. You can understand....I guess you know the famous Notre Dame quarterback Bertelli goes into the Marines on November 1st so I'm enclosing a clipping for that fellow who used to play with N.D. you didn't mention his name. I guess you & he knew almost the whole Notre Dame team is enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve guess they know the best outfit! Always did like Notre Dame! Also enclosed is a note on Pearl Harbor. All I can say about w the J_ps are concerned is, Don't believe, it! They're too treacherours to let anything like that get out ahead of time......June October 31-43 Dearest Edward Guess you know this is both our sister's birthdays. From now on it should be an easy one to remember......We had dinner in Roger's Corner which is the old Jack Dempsey's. It's good nice food......They have a huge bar and you'll see it on the postcard I sent you. We had our pictures taken and I'm sending you mine only to see because it's pretty good of all of us except Doris....when you've gazed long enough at it send it back to me to keep......... read more
