Krag Model 1902

Rear Sight

(See photos below)

Offered is a nice Model 1902 Krag- Jø rgensen first-type rear sight (rifle) with second-type eye piece with peep plate. First-type sights are identified by having the addition of very fine serrations on the left side of the sight leaf so that the slide would not move during recoil as happened with the older model 1898 sight, causing the range elevation setting to change during battle. Also found on this first type sight is a dismounting slot in the leaf spring, "which is visible when the leaf is rotated forward."

Interesting to note is the very fine serrations on this sight leaf are criss-crossed rather than straight and unlike any pictured in the detailed book, The Krag Rifle .

Rear sight windage knob is a Model 1903, "which was used in 1905 on refurbished Krag sights after the Model 1903 rear sight was changed to the Model 1905 sight."

A " Z" is stamped next to the rear mounting hole behind the leaf spring.

I've attempted to describe this item to the best of my knowledge using the information from the book The Krag Rifle by Lt. Col. William S. Brophy. Quotations are also from the book.

Condition

This sight is in very nice condition, considering it is 100+ years old. Some of the bluing remains, but is worn from edges and obvious wear points. The usual scuff marks and scratches are present. Overall, it's a very nice sight.
