This climbing black bear is made out of pine and is about 30 inches tall. At the base it is approximately 9 inches in diameter, and weighs about 23 pounds. He is designed to be mounted on the corner of your house, or a porch beam. He will even fit on a stump, about 8" - 10" in diameter. He is looking over his left shoulder, and hangingon for dear life! The artist uses a chainsaw to cut the bear's shape and finishes the finer features of the carving with small hand tools and carving knives. As with any natural wooden sculptures, cracking is always a possibility. To help reduce the likelihood and severity of this cracking, all of this artist's chainsaw carvings are dried, and cracks are repaired before the painting and finishing process. Another method of minimizing cracking is the relief cut (a vertical slit cut with the chainsaw) in the back of each carving in order to help draw any future cracking away from the finished body and facial features and toward the back. The piece is painted, then sprayed with a clear coat of gloss marine spar varnish, making it ideal for either indoor or outdoor display. This chainsaw carving was made in Plains, Montana.
