Perfins, that identified the company of use, were punched into the stamp at the time it was affixed to the postcard or envelope. Their purpose was to discourage employees personal use of the machines. The use of perfins on the corporate Vending and Affixing machines were primarily limited to the cities of New York, Detroit and Chicago. It commenced during 1909 and only lasted until 1913 before it was discontinued. In the early 1900's advertising was primarily done through the printed word, much of it by mail. In an effort to speed this slow process, several companies were busily at work developing Vending and Affixing Machines, to apply stamps to postcards and envelopes. These companies requested imperforate sheets from the US Postal Dept, which they would then strip and create coils to be dispensed by their machines. Some of the machines could process 250 envelopes a minute ! The current perforations on issued Govt coils were much too fragile for these high speed machines. So there were hundreds of thousands, if not millions of these, sent through the mail. Many, like the spam of today, were quickly discarded, never to be seen again.
