3846 Bean Co. Indian Queen Perfume trade card Native American PhiladelphiaA very scarce trade card. The version that is larger than this one is scarce also, but this one is more so.The study of the American Indian in 19th century advertising is deep in contradiction of concurrent realities of the time. This beautiful image, if not exaggerated, idealizes and romanticizes the very people this country was exterminating at the exact same time. The wars with the Sioux and other western Native American tribes were in progress. The Wounded Knee Massacre of 1891 was yet to occur. The disconnection between the reality in the West and the reality in Philadelphia, the origin of this trade card, is amazing. Or confusing. Or inexplicable. Was the news not getting East? Was there ignorance in the East denial? There are at least 3 variations of this card. They rate from scarce to rare. This one is very scarce. One earlier version has some noticeable variations in the overall design and is clearly earlier, possibly late 1870’s. The third is like this one, but a larger version and with some other minor variations.Likely we will never know why a specific decision was made in the design of this card. In the larger version of this card, the woman is clearly dark skinned, as in Native American. In this card, the woman is fair skinned. She is a White Indian. read more
