The Starry Night" was painted by Vincent van Gogh in June 1889. One of the most memorable works ever created by this artist, it depicts the night time view outside his sanitarium room in Southern France. In a letter to his brother Theo, Van Gogh wrote, "This morning I saw the country from my window a long time before sunrise, with nothing but the morning star, which looked very big," which refers the subject of inspiration.
