Up for auction are these four wonderful old pillow tops. This great set is all hand appliqued and hand embroidered with great detail and fine craftsmanship. They are made with beautiful old solid, striped, and small flower print fabrics, hand sewn onto a solid cotton background.. The fine lines and details of the birds are all hand embroidered. These pillows are backed with lovely coordinated old Waverly glosheen fabric. I'm not a bird expert, but they look to me to be a male and female pheasant on one, a wild turkey on the second, possibly a quail on the third, and I'm not sure about the one with the long beak on the fourth. These great pillows measure about 17" across and 17" tall. They are sewn around three of their edges, leaving the fourth edge open to stuff. These four wonderful pillow tops were designed by Marion Cheever Whiteside Newton, a well known quilter. In 1940 Marion W. Newton designed and sold quilt kits, patterns, and completed quilts. Some of these intricate applique quilt designs were geared toward children and the company was named Story Book Quilts. T was a recent exhibit scheduled at the New England Quilt Museum to display 28 wonderful quilts of Marion Cheever Whiteside Newton.
