Interestingly, the C-47 was first designed as a passenger airliner, the DC-3, in the 1930’s. Its smooth design and rugged airframe made it strong, versatile, and very popular among airline companies. This U.S. Navy version was used for the exploration and transport of equipment to Antarctica. Its usefulness was not overlooked by one of Douglas’ best customers, the U.S. Army. In 1940, the C-47 was modified to become a troop carrier, with room enough for 27 combat ready soldiers. The original Wright Cyclone engines were replaced with Pratt and Whitney radial piston engines to improve performance.
