The following year the 50th Regiment (Gordon Highlanders) was also authorized for Victoria. Both units provided formed sub-units and individual reinforcements to units of the Canadian Expeditionary Force during World War 1. During the post War reorganization of the Militia these two regiments were amalgamated in 1920 to form The Canadian Scottish Regiment. It is military tradition that when units are amalgamated to form a new unit the founding date of the oldest unit shall be the founding date of the new one which, in the case of The Canadian Scottish, is 3 September 1912. Thus on 15 August 1913 the 50th Regiment (Gordon Highlanders) was authorized. Victorians of Scottish heritage immediately purchased equipment and uniforms to fully outfit 500 men. The Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary’s) perpetuates the 88th Regiment and thus their founding date is also ours.The Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary’s) is a distinguished infantry regiment dating its roots back to the early 1900’s. The regiment bears 42 battle honours, some close to a century old. The unit is proud of its heritage and traditions and of its four members who have received the Victoria Cross (VC), the highest military decoration for bravery and courage. The Regiment is located in Victoria, Nanaimo, and Courtenay, British Columbia. The Regimental Headquarters is located at the Bay Street Armoury in Victoria. The Armoury is a National Historic Site that was officially completed on 30 November 1915. The Regiment is part of the 39 Canadian Brigade Group, Land Forces Western Area.One of four infantry regiments in B.C., the Canadian Scottish is the largest regiment in 39 Brigade and continues to evolve operationally. The infantry is the backbone of the army and it leads the way. As a light infantry regiment, the unit relies on its dismounted skills to be successful. On exercises the Regiment conducts raids, reconnaissance patrols, ambushes, amphibious assaults and airmobile operations. The soldiers must be flexible, versatile and fit to meet the demands and complexities of the modern battlefield.The Regiment trains on Wednesday nights and one weekend a month to meet the realities of the “Three Block War” – combat fighting, peacekeeping, and humanitarian support. The training is challenging and rewarding and prepares the soldiers to react to difficult situations both at home and abroad. The main role of the army reserve is to augment the Regular Force often in disaster relief operations domestically and overseas. To date The Canadian Scottish as sent officers, senior non-commissioned officers and junior ranks on operation duty throughout the world on United Nations missions and over 60 members have served in combat operations in Afghanistan. Captain Robert Peel, MMV, CD was awarded the Medal of Military Valour for action in Afghanistan in June of 2008.The Regiment’s soldiers have also served Canada in responding to disasters such as the Victoria snow storm of 1997 and the wild fires in Central BC in 2003. Happier occasions included sending soldiers to the 1976 Olympic Summer Games in Montreal, the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics and Vancouver’s 2010 Winter Olympics. read more
