Purchased in late 2008, this rare and hard to come by Felt Z1 is Felt's top of the line frameset, with a slightly more relaxed geometry than the F1, but a beefier bottom bracket and more rigid top tube than the F1. It was finally built up this spring and unfortunately, this bike was sold incorrectly as a 56cm (ordered correctly, shipped incorrect size), but it is in fact a 54, forcing the owner to part with it after 400 miles while a newer correct size Z1 shipped. Never raced. Professionally assembled and disassembled. There is the lightest HINT of head tube cable rub, three tiny lines inside the "E" on the drive side of the down tube, a white surface mark on the top tube that can be buffed out (I plan on buffing it out myself, but if I don't get a chance), the clear chainstay protector has a knick right above the cable stop and there is a tiny paint chip on the aluminum rear non-drive side dropout, and any/all parts of the frame are photographed for you to se e below, especially anything I just mentioned. The frame literally looks like it's been sitting in the showroom and I am being VERY picky/conservative with noting marks on the frame. You won't find a nicer frameset marked "used" anywhere. The seat post has a few marks on it from adjusting (hidden in the seat tube when installed) and there is one scuff that is photographed. What you get is what it came with: Frame, Fork, Headset and Ritchey WCS seatpost. The frame, derailleur hanger, cable bosses and some liberal head tube grease tips the scale at 905 grams. The fork, expander nut and crown race weighs 344 grams. The headset weighs 75 grams. The seatpost is 168 grams. This frameset is LIGHT and STIFF. The complete bike with Ksyrium ES and SRAM Red can easily weigh 14lbs in a 54cm. A review has this to say about it: "It's a solid handling bike with a laterally stiffer top tube than the Roubaix; it's also stiffer in the bb area. One thing that's telling about this bike. All the Slipstream boys started on F-series bikes last year, but over half the team ended the year on the Z1 based on it's all around feel and stability. Great, great bike." Some history on the Z1: "...At the next Interbike the company showed off its first carbon bike, the F1. A quick look at the tube shapes told me it wasn’t an open-mold design with their decals. It was their own design, engineered in-house. The F1 was essentially the company’s long-admired road bike geometry in carbon form. In 2007 the company introduced a new road bike model, the Z1. Like the F, the Z was offered at a number of price points, but the Z1 was notable because it used the same blend of ultra-high, high and intermediate modulus carbon fibers as the F1. The similarities ended there. The Z-series bikes are grand touring bikes. Compared to the F-series bikes, they are built around longer head tubes (not hard to do), slacker head tube angles and more fork rake. They also get longer chainstays. The slackish head tube angle, generous fork rake and longish chainstays gave the bike a longer wheelbase while maintaining the same weight distribution between front and rear wheels as the F-series bikes. It’s easy to be cynical and just say Felt was aping what Specialized did with the Roubaix, but there are a few differences worth noting. First, the bottom bracket is a bit higher on the Z than on the Roubaix. Next, the Z doesn’t use the Zertz vibration dampers—Felt’s head of engineering, Jeff Soucek, says he doesn’t believe they do anything to help the ride quality of the bike; I’ve argued the point with him, but that’s a different story. Third, as mentioned previously, Felt specs exactly the same blend of carbon fibers in the Z1 that goes into the flagship F1 model. My 56cm Z1 frame weighed in at 906 grams (g). Lots of companies will talk a good sub-kilo game, but far fewer are doing it than you might think. I watched a 52cm Trek Madone—minus seat mast—tip the scales at 1133g.
