70mm Pathe Freres f2 Serie Superieure Projection Petzval lens I accept that this lens does not have the 'beauty' of those that are set in brass barrels and having rack and pinnion movements but there's no mistake that not only is this a petzval but it offers a far cheaper route (than the conventional style) in buying a petzval, which generally currently command fairly high prices and this is very much a taking lens The barrel states that the focal length is 70mm. The glass (and not the width of the barrel) is 31mm across, which means that the fstop is marginally over f2. A very fast lens indeed The 5x7 camera that I tested the lens on does not have sufficient 'shortness' in the movements for me to make a definitive statement regarding the format covered but from what I have seen the lens will almost certainly cover 4x5 and may also be good enough to cover 5x7, although some vignetting at this format, should be expected. The image seen (although when tested is not in focus), is however soft overall. Update, as at 31 December - I have now tested the lens on a 4x5 Camera and that format is very easily covered and there is no vignetting The barrel has a length of 46mm and the elements a width of 42mm.
