This is an Original Noel Rockmore from 1972 Titled: Homage a' la Goulue It is a 14 X 11 Watercolor/pen on paper and NOT framed but nicely matted. It is from the Shirley Marvin Collection and it is from her SketchBook #25 - Titled: 1972 Paris Book It is the 13th page of the Sketchbook and is titled, signed and located Paris by Rockmore The catalog Number within the Shirley Marvin Collection given to this work is 72.784 This work was purchased directly from The Artist, Noel Rockmore, by Shirley Marvin and comes with a letter of authenticity. What is the story about Rockmore and Paris and the Homage a' la Goulue? Rockmore was sent to Paris in 1972 by his friend George Wein, founder of the New Orleans and Newport Jazz Festivals, who was trying to help Rockmore and promote his career. Rockmore was commissioned to do at least 25 works while he was there and to give George Wein his choice of purchasing any of the works up to 25. In exchange he got a stipend for materials and an apartment was provided in Paris for him and his girlfriend for the past three years, Riva. He and Riva had made the trip together with the knowledge at the end of their trip Riva would go on to travel and Rockmore would return to New York. The idea of having to produce a certain number of works caused Rockmore stress as well as his impending breakup. According to Wikipedia, Louise Weber (13 July 1866 – 30 January 1929) was a French can-can dancer who performed under the stage name of La Goulue ("the glutton "). She also was referred to as the Queen of Montmartre . La Goulue became synonymous with the Cancan and the Moulin Rouge nightclub. The toast of Paris and the highest paid entertainer of her day, she became one of the favorite subjects for Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec , immortalized by his portraits and posters of her dancing at the Moulin Rouge. Following the closure of her show, La Goulue disappeared from the public eye. Suffering from depression, she drank heavily and dissipated the small fortune she had accrued while dancing. Alcoholic and destitute, La Goulue returned to Montmartre in 1928. Selling peanuts, cigarettes, and matches on a street corner near the Moulin Rouge, no one recognized the severely overweight and haggard former Queen of Montmartre. There is no doubt that Rockmore felt an artistic empathy with Goulue and sadly his life would parallel hers to the bitter end. Who was Noel Rockmore? He was recognized and had shows at The Whitney, MOMA, the Met & the Hirschorn as Noel Davis before he was 28. His parents, Floyd Davis & Gladys Rockmore Davis , were two of the most recognized artist in America from the 1930s through the 1940s. The Noel Rockmore Project (website - / ) has been working to bring this master artist to light for the past three years after 1400 works of Noel Rockmore were discovered in Shirley Marvin's storage in New Orleans after Katrina. There is a nice 10 page Rockmore article that has just come out in a major publication by John Ed Bradley called The Tomb of Noel Rockmore /article/tomb-rockmore and Rockmore will be included in a Show in Marfa Texas this spring. Rockmore will also have another show in Lagrange, GA that opens with a three day bash on October 28-30, 2011. A book, screenplay, documentary and movie are all in the near future.
