This US First Day of Issue cover of the US 50c Chester W. Nimitz stamp that commemorated his 100th anniversary of birth has the signature of his son, Chester W. Nimitz who attained the rank of Rear Admiral in the US Navy. The stamp was canceled Fredericksburg TX with the first day of issue postmark of Feb. 22, 1985. The son died January 2, 2002 at 86. In failing health he and his wife of 63 years took their own lives in an apparent suicide pact. The son had made his own name in the Navy in World War II and the Korean War. He was stationed on the submarine USS Sturgeon when Pearl Harbor was attacked and later became executive officer of the USS Bluefish. He earned the Navy Cross, three Silver Stars and a Bronze Star for service aboard submarines and destroyers. He retired from the Navy as captain in 1957 and was later promoted to Rear Admiral in retirement in recognition of his combat experience. The cachet on the envelope at the left was sponsored by the Editors of Navy Times. Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, whose image appears both on the stamp and in the cachet, was commander in chief Pacific throughout World War II. He later served two years as Chief of Naval Operations.
