Two piece advertising can labels for E.B. Mallory & Co.Arrow Brand tomatoes with packing house located at Galesville Maryland . Colorful labels in black, red,green and yellow. One label has a graphic of the packing house building and the other shows a tomato with a red arrow through it. Printed by the National Bureau of Engraving in Philadelphia PA. Labels have glue stains on back and are fragile. Large label measurements 5 ½ x 4 ¼ and smaller label 5 x 4 ¼ Dwight Davidson Mallory was born in 1837 in New Haven CT. In 1854 he started in the grocery business under his own name until 1856 when he moved to Detroit Michigan where he became a pioneer in the oyster trade. In 1862 he removed his headquarters to Baltimore under the D.D. Mallory & Company name. He built up an enormous oyster and fruit packing business establishing branch houses in Detroit , Chicago and Pittsburgh . Mallory remained the head of the firm for 20 years until ill health forced him to sell the business. Gilbert Lee and Ward Andrus bought D.D. Mallory & Co. in 1885. Lee and Andrus only added a the to the beginning of the company name – thus The D.D. Mallory & Co. In 1890 he purchased Andrus’ interest in the business.
