1880's Aesthetic Movement silverplate holder with pink opalescent hobnail bowl. Holder was produced by Aurora Silver Plate Manufacturing Company of Aurora, Illinois. The company was founded in 1869 and was succeeded by Mulholland Bros., Inc. in 1919. The mark could not be brought into focus in the digital photos so it is not included, but it is clearly present on the lower side of the base. The base motifs are tiny Japonesque panels with various Aesthetic Movement decorations that include birds, bats, insect, owls, spiders with webs, butterflies, lizzards and ants. Again, these themes could not be brought into focus but are clearly present on the base and very interesting when observed magnified through a loop. This particular piece is included in Brian D. Coleman's book, The Victorian Dining Room, page 74, and was lent from my collection for that purpose. This Bride's Basket holder has no loss of silverplate, no dents or damage. The glass hobnail bowl is free of chips, cracks, "flea bite" dings or other breakage. This is an outstanding piece with an unusual floral handle that includes sunflowers at mid-point of the handle sides between the base and the top. Dimensions are as follows: Metal Holder - Base Diam at Lower Side: 5.5"; Bowl Holder Rim Dia.- 3.5"; Overall Height to Top of Handle - 12.75"; Max. Dia. of Handle -10" (Measured read more
