Partie del la HAUTE AETHIOPIE, ou font L'EMPIRE des ABISSINS et la NUBIE by Nicolas Sanson Engraved by L'Huillier, published Paris 1656 An early copper engraved map of East Africa enhanced with outline hand colour. Covers the Upper Nile region to the Red Sea and Indian Ocean, mostly present day Somali, Eritrea, Sudan and Ethiopia. The imagined source of the Nile in the two lakes of Lake Zaflan and Lake Zaire or Zembre is prominent. Dated in the plate 1656. Scarce. Fine condition, centre fold as issued, blank verso. The minor loss to the outer border seen to the upper left is an original printing error and not later damage. Approx. 12" x 8" (290mm x 210mm) map area only with good margins beyond on robust hand laid paper. Please scroll right down for further images. Nicolas Sanson (Sanson d'Abbeville) (1600 -1667) Sanson published his most important work, the "Cartes Generale de Toutes les Parties du Monde" in 1658.
