2 original tintype photographs of African American Civil War veteran Simon P. Holden of Providence, Rhode Island. He was born in Warick, Rhode Island and I've found records identifying him as mullato or African American. He enlisted in the Navy in 1863 at the rank of Landsman and served as a barber/coachman. His service record shows service aboard the Nantucket, Vermont, and Flambeau. I've seen records showing his age as 21 or 16 at time of enlistment. This photograph was obtained from the estate of a descendant of the Holden family. The larger tintype is labeled "Uncle Prince" and I'm told Prince was Simon's middle name and this image would've been taken around the time of his enlistment.Approx. 3.5" x 2.5" and 5" x 7".
