Age/drying cracks. *This item comes with its own custom-built stand.* This outstanding Baule Goli Heddle Pulley comes from a Californian Collector. ?? Goli is the day-long spectacle that normally involves the whole village and includes the appearance of four pairs of masks, music played on special instruments, and, ideally, the jojoyous consumption of a great deal of palm wine. Goli can be performed both as an entertainment and for the funeral of important men. The very characteristic, round-shaped “lunar” goli is surmounted by two horns. It was borrowed from the Wan for a celebration adopted by the Baule after 1900. Celebrating peace and joy, they would sing, dance, and drink palm wine. In the procession, the goli preceded the four groups of dancers, representing young adolescents. The goli would be used on the occasion of the new harvest, the visit of dignitaries, or at the funerals of notables. Boxes for the mouse oracle (in which sticks are disturbed by a live mouse, to give the augury) are unique to the Baule, whose carvers also produce heddle pulleys, combs, hairpins, and gong mallets. Over the past few decades we have been passionate collectors of African antiques with particular interest in tribally used ceremonial masks and figures. We have both previously lived in West Africa for more than 15 years and have an extensive personal collection from our travels around Africa. African tribal art has been very sought after over the past decades and it is commonly known that tribal art has been plundered during this time and many 'copies' have entered the market. However, with the right knowledge and expertise it is still possible to find nice authentic tribal art pieces in Africa. We also take requests from buyers to find specific pieces in Africa. We are in Africa several times a year searching for tribal treasures from 'untapped' sources and our travels involve going deep into the remote villages. Our passion is for rare tribally used artefacts with excellent 'style' and 'patina' which have moved us. The sources for our tribal pieces stretch across Africa from Sierra Leone, Cote D'Ivoire, Mali, Nigeria etc and down as far as the Congo. We have a house, a warehouse and an outlet situated on the beachfront in Accra in Ghana where we initially store the treasures from our African hunting trips. All pieces are fumigated prior to shipment from Ghana and upon arrival in the UK the pieces are re-checked for mould and any evidence of insects before we enter them into our collection. We have local experts in West Africa and we utilise their knowledge of the woods used and the carving styles of the relevant tribes to help assess the age and authenticity of the pieces we find. To keep up to date with the tribal art market we regularly attend auctions in Paris such as Sotheby's, Christie's and Bonham's and we have had pieces appraised.
